Ramsbottom Hedgehog Care & Rehabilitation

Every Hedgehog Deserves
a Second Chance

Be Our Saviour, Not Our Silence

A small, dedicated rescue in the heart of Ramsbottom. Run by Steph and Terry Malpas, we rescue, rehabilitate and release hedgehogs back into the wild.

Found a hedgehog? If you see one out during the day, it almost certainly needs help. Call 07824 360 458 or follow our rescue guide.
What We Do

Rescue. Rehabilitate. Release.

From rescuing injured and underweight hedgehogs to nursing them back to health and releasing them into safe gardens.

01

Rescue

We take in sick, injured, orphaned and underweight hedgehogs from across the Ramsbottom area. If you find a hedgehog that needs help, we're here.

02

Rehabilitate

Each hedgehog receives individual care, from treating parasites and infections, wound dressing and medicated baths, hand rearing baby hoglets to building their weight back up until they're strong enough for release.

03

Release

Once healthy, our hedgehogs are released into safe, hedgehog-friendly gardens where they can live wild again.

Emergency

Found a Hedgehog?

If you've found a hedgehog that looks unwell, injured, or is out during the day, follow these steps.

  1. 01

    Pick it up carefully

Use gardening gloves or a towel. Their spines won't break the skin through gloves.

  2. 02

Place it in a high-sided box

Line it with a towel or newspaper. Add a shallow dish of water (never milk) and some meaty cat or dog food.

  3. 03

    Keep it warm and quiet

Place a hot water bottle or drinks bottle filled with warm water under a towel in the box. Make sure the hedgehog has room to move away from the heat. Keep the box indoors, somewhere quiet.

  4. 04

Contact us or your nearest rescue

Call 07824 360 458 or message us on Facebook Messenger so we can assess the hedgehog and arrange to take it in.

Success Story

Meet Twiggy

Twiggy arrived at the rescue weighing just 334g, less than a bag of sugar. She was cold, dehydrated, riddled with parasites and so weak she couldn't even lift her head to reach food.

"Her head was on the floor of the tub, and she was pushing her head along just to try and get near the food and the water. She literally couldn't do it at all."

After a month of dedicated care, Twiggy's weight more than doubled to 808g. In April 2025, she was released into a safe garden in Greenmount.

About Us

Meet Steph & Terry

Steph and Terry Malpas started Ramsbottom Hedgehog Care & Rehabilitation in October 2024, after a year of fostering for another rescue.

What began in a grandson's old bedroom has grown into a dedicated small rescue. No big teams, no fancy facilities. Just two people who refuse to look the other way.

How You Can Help

Every bit of support makes a real difference to the hedgehogs in our care.

Donate Supplies

We always need supplies for our hedgehogs. Every donation goes directly to their care.

  • Meaty cat or dog food (wet)
  • Fleece blankets and towels
  • Kitchen roll and newspaper
  • Heat pads and hot water bottles

Make Your Garden Hedgehog-Friendly

Simple changes to your garden can save hedgehog lives.

  • Cut a 13cm x 13cm hole in your fence
  • Check before strimming or mowing
  • Never use slug pellets
  • Remove or check netting regularly
  • Leave wild areas and log piles
  • Put out water and meaty cat food at dusk

Spread the Word

Follow us on social media and share our posts. The more people who know what to do when they find a hedgehog, the more lives we can save.

Offer a Release Garden

When our hedgehogs are healthy and ready for release, they need safe gardens to call home. If you have a hedgehog-friendly garden, we'd love to hear from you.

We Can't Do This Without You
